UK Indoor Championships

Scotland hosted a busy UK Indoor Tug of War Championships from 21st – 22nd February. Titles for 12 weight categories up for grabs over the weekend with Ladies and Gents teams competing. Representations from Scotland, England and Northern Ireland were present for the Closed weight categories; with St. Pats of the Republic of Ireland and Monnickadam and Lagerweij of the Netherlands also present for the open club championships.

Saturday

The closed UK championships were competed on Saturday morning with the Gents 600kg, 680kg and Mixed 600kg weights.
Scotland 600kg team, represented by a mix of Kinneff Tug of War club and Tinto Farmers pullers, dominated the league along with N. Ireland to set up the first exciting final of the championships. Scotland pulled well but the N. Irish team were too strong and won the gold.
Scotland’s next challenge came in the form of the Gents 680kg weight category. Again the Scotland team was dominant throughout the league and pulled themselves into the final against England A. This time the Scots kept their form and went on to win the 680kg gold.
The last Closed weight category was the Mixed (4 Gents & 4 Ladies) 600kg. Scotland and England again battled it out in the final. Scotland secured the victory with an ecstatic win for the gold medal.
The Ladies 500kg was the first Open Weight category of the weekend to be decided. St Pats narrowly beat Tinto Farmers in the final.
The first Gents weight was the 640kg. This was decided in a final between Country Club and Monnickadam. It was the N. Irish Country Club who came out on top with the victory.

Sunday

In the reverse from the Saturday, the Gents 640kg was first up. Country Club again pulled through to the final but this time Lagerweij of the Netherlands stood in their way. Country Club soon showed why they had won the same weight the previous day with another victory to take gold.
In the Gents 700kg club weight, Lagerweij made another appearance in the final, this time against the Scots from Tinto. However it was Tinto who managed to power to the victory to take gold.
Kinneff of Scotland and Kilroe of England were the finalists in the first Ladies weight category, the 520kg. This time the English club took the upper hand to win the first English gold of the weekend.
Next up was the weight category with the largest numbers of entries, the Gents 580kg. This was to be a closely competed weight. The two Dutch teams, Monnickadam and Lagerweij dominated the league. Both went through to the semi finals along with Kinneff and Country Club. Kinneff pulled well but Monnickadam were too strong and had to concede the tie. Country Club managed to turn things around in the other semi final and beat Lagerweij to face the green and white team in the final. This was a close final but only one team could win. The power from Monnickadam was clear but the fitness of Country Club won out in the end. Country Club took the gold.
The last weight category of the weekend was the Mixed 600kg. This was a Scotland vs England final with Tinto Farmers vs Kilroe. Tinto proved too much for Kilroe and pulled on to win the last gold of the weekend.

23/08/2014 - GENSB YOUTH INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT RESULTS

Once again the young pullers of Europe gathered to compete under the GENSB banner. This year’s GENSB tournament was hosted by the Tug of War Association at St Martin’s Plain, Folkestone, Kent in association with the Army Cadet Force. Around 550 Competitors from 9 different countries formed 39 junior teams made up of junior male and junior female pullers.

39 teams from 9 nations entered the competition (Germany 3 teams, England 8 teams, Netherlands 6 teams, Switzerland 6 teams, Belgium 7 teams, plus guests Ireland 2 teams, Northern Ireland 1 team, Scotland 2 teams, Lithuania 3 teams plus 1 Europa Mix). The GENSB competition saw Northern Ireland and Scotland enter junior teams into the event for the first time.

The ethos of the GENSB competition is a friendly international event, hosted on a budget, with the price of accommodation capped at an affordable level for competitors. Studies by UK Sports suggest that in addition to access to transport and the availability of good facilities, cost is a huge barrier to participation in sport by young people. As such, GENSB is an important event in terms of encouraging young people involved in tug of war, and this is demonstrated by the number of countries that take part in GENSB every year.

The last 16 matches were as follows:

Mosnang (Switzerland) vs Ramygala (Lithuania)
TTV Schijf (Netherlands) vs TTV Powerrangers (Belgium)
TTV De Spoortrekkers (Netherlands) vs England Barbarians
TTV Bison (Netherlands) vs TTV Elektrotrekkers (Belgium)
Appenzel (Switzerland) vs Eire OG (Ireland)
Ebersecken (Switzerland) vs Gloucester ACF Boys
Sins (Switzerland) vs Walkirch (Switzerland)
Simonswald (Germany) vs Eschbachtal (Germany)

Ramygala, TTV Powerrangers, England Barbarians, TTV Elektrotrekkers, Appenzel, Ebersecken, Sins and Eschbachtal progressed to the quarter finals. The quarter final line up was as follows:

Ramygala (Lithuania) vs TTV Powerrangers (Belgium)
TTV Elecktrotrekkers (Belgium) vs England Barbarians
Ebersecken (Swizerland) vs Appenzell (Switzerland)
Sins (Switzerland) vs Eschbachtal (Germany)

The bronze medal match saw Sins take the bronze medal by 2 ends to 0, which never looked in doubt. The final was between Ebersecken and Elektrotrekkers, two teams who had gone through the competition without losing an end. Both teams performed very strongly, but it was the very good team from Switzerland who took the gold medal by 2 ends to 0 to become the 2014 GENSB Champions.

At the end of the competition, medals were presented to the winning teams, and awards and thanks were given to all participants and the officials. The GENSB flag was then handed over by Vic Ludkin (England GENSB representative and chair of the GENSB committee) to the Netherlands who host next years competition. Well done to everyone who took part and thanks to the Army Cadet Force for looking after everyone over the weekend.

The GENSB trophy and medals were presented by Her Majesty’s Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Kent Lieutenant Colonel Richard C B Dixon TD DL. Medals to the officials were presented by the German Attache.

There was a total of 39 Teams from Belgium,England,Germany,Ireland,Northern Ireland,Lithuania,Scotland & Switzerland. We had a total of 11 Girls and 9 Boys who made the trip.

Scotland final position was 32nd out of 39 which for the very first time pulling at this level was a great achievment, the teams are already making plans for next years competition.

UK Indoor Championships 2013

UK Closed Indoor 600kg Men

The 600kg Closed Weight category started off with N. Ireland A beating England B two straight to take all 3 points. The second pull got off to a hesitant start as the Scotland had taken first 2 metres and was in control when the whistle was blown. This resulted in the rope being re-centred as the whistle had been blown too early. The pull then got underway with the Scotland and N. Ireland B sharing the points haul after winning an end each.  Scotland’s next pull was against England B, with the 3 points going to the Scots. Next up for Scotland was N. Ireland A.
Scotland then faced England A. England A proved their worth by beating the Scottish team 2 straight. This placed England A at the top of the league, N. Ireland A in 2nd and Scotland in provisional 3rd. The third place was conditional of the last pull of the league, between N. Ireland B and England B. This was a closely fought competition with England B taking a surprise win in the first end when N. Ireland B were blown out. The second end was also a close battle but England B were then blown out. This result meant that Scotland finished the league in 3rd with N. Ireland B finishing 4th.
For the semi-finals, England A comfortably beat England B in both ends. Scotland had a much tougher task when they took on N. Ireland A in the other semi-final. This was a much closer battle but the experience of N. Ireland A showed as they beat Scotland 2 straight to progress to the final. This left the Scots with the task of pulling against N. Ireland B for the 3rd & 4th pull off. The fitness of the Scotland team showed as they managed to beat the Irish team to take the Bronze medal. England A shrugged off the challenge from the N. Ireland A team to win the 600kg UK Gold.

UK Closed Indoorl 640kg Men

Scotland’s first pull in the 680kg weight was against England A, with Scotland winning both ends to get off to a good start. The next team for Scotland would be a much tougher contest. The Scots got off to a strong start but England B soon countered and took the end. England started the 2nd end much the stronger team and controlled the whole end. Scotland then faced N. Ireland A, with both teams getting off to slow start. Scotland managed to overpower the Irish to take the first end. The 2nd end started evenly but Scotland soon took the advantage and won the end. Scotland’s next opponents were N. Ireland B which Scotland winning both ends comfortably.
In the first of the semi-finals, England B beat England A very comfortably. Scotland faced N. Ireland A in the other semi-final, again proving to be closer than the opposite semi. The first end got off to an even start. The Irish team attacked the rope with Scotland buckling under the pressure and going to ground. Ireland made a lot of ground and Scotland didn’t manage to get back into the pull. Scotland made a substitute before the second end of the semi, Craig Hamilton on for Iain Lyon. The 2nd end got underway with the Irish taking a small advantage. Scotland again going to ground but managed to recover and counter but the Irish proved too strong and took the 2nd end.
Scotland were again contesting the 3rd & 4th Pull off, but this team with England A. In the 1st end England managed to gain some ground from the start, but had to work hard for it. Scotland start to recover bt England counter the Scot’s attack but both teams go to ground. After picking up cautions Scotland were blown out for going to ground again. In the 2nd end, England made a strong start. Scotland start to counter again but England manage to break it. Both teams again went to ground and both get back up. England proved too strong and took the 2nd end and the bronze medal.
In the final, England B comfortably won the first end against N. Ireland A. They made a strong start and dominated the end from start to finish. England B again dominated the 2nd end from the start. The Irish manage to counter but England defends well and took the sting out of the counter attack. England then controlled the remainder of the end to win the Gold medal and the 640kg UK Indoor Championship.
UK Open 560kg Men
Due to time restraints in the 560kg, the final standings in the league were used to  award the final placing to the teams. Ballyhegan were joint 1st with Country Club. Due to both teams havig the same number of cautions, same weight and drawing 1-1 in their league tie, it was down to the flip of a coin to decide the winner. Ballyhegan win Gold.

UK Open 640kg Men

In the open 640kg category, Tinto were drawn up against Kilroe of England for their first pull. Tinto beat Kilroe convincingly in both ends. The next opponents to face Tinto were Mountainview. The 1st end got off to an even start but Mountainview soon gained a small advantage. Tinto managed to slow them but Mountainview soon re-gained control of the end to win it. Tinto made an aggressive start to the 2nd end and gained ½ metre. Mountainview were defending well and managed to slow Tinto who were keeping the pressure on, still gaining more ground. Mountainview managed a counter attack that broke Tinto and won the 2nd end and all 3 points.
Richill were up next for Tinto. Tinto slowly carved out an advantage and continued with a slow but steady drive to win the first end from the off. Tinto went on to win the 2nd end in similar fashion but were made to work hard for it. Tinto then faced off against Raunds of England. Tinto took advantage of a poor start from Raunds to win the end from the start, the only slip up when the rope came too quick and both teams went to ground. Tinto recovered quickly and won the first end. Tinto went on to win the 2nd end comfortably. Tinto’s penultimate pull off was against Rockies. Tinto won the 1st end comfortably and the 2nd was won again by Tinto, who had to work harder for it but were in control from the start. The last pull off in the league stage for Tinto was Clonmany B of the Republic of Ireland. Tinto were made to work for the first end but controlled it from start to finish. Both teams made an even start to te 2nd end but Clonmany pulled through to win it.
Tinto faced Sheen Farmers in the semi-final. Sheen dominated the 1st and 2nd end  to go through to the final. Tinto looking to the 3rd & 4th pull off instead where they faced Clonmany B. Tinto got off to a good start in the first end but Clonmany B got in behind Tinto and took the 1st end. The 2nd end got off to an even start with Tinto slowly driving out a small advantage. Clonmany B countered and pulled Tinto across the line to win Bronze.
Sheen and Mountainview got off to an even start with slow, strong ushing from the irish team. Sheen turned on the pressure and took the 4 metres to win the end. Sheen got off to a good start to the 2nd end and took the 1st metre. Mountainview managed to stop the English and mount an attack of their own. However Sheen managed to re-group and powered through the last 3 metres and won the Gold medal.
The weekend was an all round success for all teams who were involved. The Scotland Teams did well to win the Bronze in the 600kg but were unfortunate not to come away with a higher placing in the other weight categories. On behalf of S.T.O.W.A, thanks to all involved with the organisation of the 2013 UK Indoor Chanmpionships.
